ABSTRACT

Objective: We investigated the effects of Coix-seed Reactive Derivatives (CRD) on fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. Methods: Various concentrations of CRD (0.00001%, 0.0001%, 0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%, 1%) were added to human fibroblasts, and changes in cell count and extracellular collagen production were measured. Results: Fibroblasts proliferated by the addition of CRD, peaked at about 1.7 times when the CRD concentration was 0.0001%, and then decreased as the addition concentration increased. On the other hand, the collagen concentration in the extracellular matrix of fibroblasts increased as the CRD addition concentration increased, and the collagen concentration increased sharply at 0.1% of CRD concentration or more. Conclusion: It was suggested that CRD has a function of increasing the proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen production.

ABSTRACT

Background: Botulinum A exotoxin is an established treatment for glabellar frown lines, crow's feet, and horizontal furrows of the forehead. The glabella is probably the most common site for botulinum toxin treatment in Asians. Five glabellar contraction patterns have been classified in earlier studies based on eyebrow approximation, depression, and elevation. Unfortunately, this was found to be confusing by many practitioners. Indians, as all Asians, have smaller muscles compared to the European population, and there is no consensus on the optimal dosage per injection site or concentration of toxin to be used. Aims: (a) Identification and classification of glabellar wrinkle patterns in Indians. (b) Optimization of the minimal effective dose of toxin per site. Materials and Methods: Retrospective photographic analysis of 200 patients who received botulinum toxin for the first time to treat glabellar wrinkles was conducted. The wrinkle patterns were identified and classified by the authors based on the prevalence of perpendicular and transverse glabellar lines, nasal, and forehead wrinkles. Results: Six patterns were identified: (1) 11 (2) U (3) Pi (4) X (5) W (6) I. The relevant muscles were identified and doses optimized for those sites. Limitations: The doses mentioned in this study are not universal for all patients and toxin units would have to be altered and individualized according to the bulk of the facial muscles and individual needs. Conclusion: The investigators classification, injection patterns, and dosage may provide valuable guidance to facial esthetic treatment.

ABSTRACT

Background: Aging is an inevitable biological change, but understanding the process of aging of face is important to customize the treatment options for facial rejuvenation. Evidence-based estimation of global facial aging is necessary for the validation of various treatment modalities. Aims: Classification and implementation of a scoring system for aging face based upon volume loss and surface changes as evident by drooping of different areas of the face and appearance of fine and deep wrinkles, respectively, and to apply this drooping–wrinkles classification on 54 participants to evaluate and understand the validity of scoring. Methods: An observational study was conducted, and scores were calculated based on 13 parameters (7 areas of drooping and 6 areas of wrinkles on the face) at Aura Skin Institute, Chandigarh, India. Accordingly, age was divided in different age groups followed by clinical estimation of facial age and calculation of scores. Results: According to our classification and scoring system, 61% (33 out of 54) of the participants were correlated with their chronological age group. Out of the remaining 21 (39%) participants who were aging faster, 13 (24%) were in the age group of 25–35 years. Approximately one-fourth of the patients in the age groups 36–45 and 46–55 years were aging faster. Only 1 patient had scores showing younger age in comparison to chronological age. Overall, there was a good correlation between the calculated score and the chronological age of patients. Moreover, a gradual increase in scores was noticed with increasing age groups. Conclusions: This is a new clinical classification and scoring system for facial age which is much easier to apply in daily clinical practice for easy calculation of baseline scores and customizing their antiaging treatment options. Moreover, it will also make it easier to compare the efficacy of treatment in their future follow-ups. The limitation of this study is that it has been proposed for all skin types but validation has been done only for Indian participants.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Over the past 10 years, monopolar radiofrequency (MRF) technology has been widely used by dermatologists as a valuable modality to effectively tighten and rejuvenate photoaged skin. It also has the benefit of a short recovery time. OBJECTIVE: Using an objective parameter, this study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of MRF, which is the basic modality of radiofrequency technologies, for treatment of periorbital wrinkles in Korean patients. METHODS: We enrolled 70 middle-aged female patients with periorbital wrinkles for this study. Each patient underwent triple sessions of MRF treatment in the periorbital region, separated by 2-week intervals. Clinical photographs were obtained, and the areas of wrinkles were measured using a Robo Skin Analyzer CS50 (Inforward Inc., Japan) at baseline and 4 weeks after the final treatment session. RESULTS: Significant reduction in the mean area of periorbital wrinkles was detected at 1-month follow-up (80.64±28.96 mm2) compared to baseline (95.08±31.93 mm2). The improvement ratio of the wrinkle area was 15.19%. Pain during procedure seemed to be tolerable without any local anesthesia for all patients. Transient mild erythema was the only side effect reported during the study. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, MRF could still be an attractive modality for Korean patients with periorbital wrinkles if the treatment is conducted repeatedly with sufficient energy and proper intervals.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Aging is a dynamic and progressive biological process in which morphological, functional and biochemical alterations occurs which compromises organism homeostasis. The epithelial cells function reduction causes visible cutaneous tissue alterations that demonstrates the individual chronological aging through the expression lines and wrinkles. The collagen and elastin production decreasing is the main responsible for the appearance of expression lines. The treatments aim to increase the production of these proteins (collagen and elastin) by techniques such as micropuncture, which induces the production of collagen by means of instruments that use needles to pierce the epidermis and cause an inflammatory cascade. This study aimed to evaluate micropuncture results in qualitative and quantitative treatment of wrinkles. The sample was composed by 10 volunteers aged 30 to 45 with wrinkles in the frontal region of the face. The volunteers were submitted to 4 micropuncture sessions with an interval of 7 days between the sessions. The results show the technique is effective for the treatment of wrinkles.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to describe a variation of the anomalous nasi muscle in relation to the surrounding structures. The anomalous nasi muscle was found in the left face of a 40-year-old female during dissection. The anomalous nasi muscle lay on the lateral side of the nose, and it originated from the frontal process of the maxilla. The origin of the anomalous nasi muscle was located medial to the middle part of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle. It ascended superomedially to blend with the deep and lateral fibers of the superficial layer of the procerus below the level of the medial palpebral ligament. The length and width of the anomalous nasi muscle were 11.9 mm and 2.8 mm, respectively. This report demonstrated a variation of the anomalous nasi muscle, which will be helpful for understating the nasal movements and nasal wrinkles.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Multiple therapies involving ablative and nonablative techniques have been developed for the rejuvenation of photodamaged skin. Radiofrequency (RF) is emerging as a gentler, nonablative skin-tightening device that delivers uniform heat to the dermis at a controlled depth. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of bipolar radiofrequency (Polaris™) and 1,550-nm fractional erbium-glass laser (Mosaic™) for the treatment of photoaging using a randomized, split-face, patient- and evaluator-blind study. METHODS: We evaluated the clinical effects after the treatment of photoaging. Ten Asian women (Fitzpatrick skin type III to IV) underwent 9 weeks of treatment (3 sessions at 3-week intervals) with monotherapy (Polaris™) on one side of the face and combination therapy with non-ablative bipolar radiofrequency (Polaris™) and 1,550-nm fractional erbium-glass laser (Mosaic™) on the other side. RESULTS: Among 10 patients, 4 were male and 6 were female. Subjective and objective assessments showed that the combination therapy was more effective. As the number of the treatment sessions increased, there was an accompanying increase in the satisfaction level and efficacy. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that bipolar radiofrequency combined with 1,550-nm fractional erbium-glass laser could be effective treatment for photoaging.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Micro-needle patches have been recently used to increase skin permeability, which improves drug delivery, and for cosmetic purposes. However, these patches may often have limited efficacy due to insufficient skin penetration and reduced compliance caused by discomfort. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the efficacy and the safety of soluble micro-spicule containing epidermal growth factor (MS-EGF) for the treatment of periocular wrinkles. METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers aged 33 to 54 years were enrolled in a randomized, controlled, split-face study. For 4 weeks, a periocular wrinkle was treated daily with either a soluble MS-EGF cream or a cream containing EGF alone. All subjects underwent 8 weeks of follow-up. Efficacy was assessed using an ultrasonic measurement of dermal depth and density, digital skin image analysis, 5-point photonumeric scale for periocular wrinkles and subjective satisfaction. RESULTS: MS-EGF group showed statistically significant increase of dermal depth and density compared to EGF alone group after 4 and 8 weeks. In addition, there was a marked improvement shown in clinical and 3-dimensional skin image in MS-EGF group. The treatments were well-tolerated; no significant side-effect was noted. CONCLUSION: The MS-EGF formulation may represent an effective and biocompatible advance in the treatment of periocular wrinkles.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of using cream containing mucus secreted by snails to reduce wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, restore dermal density, and lift the skin. METHODS: Cream containing mucus secreted by snails was applied to the lateral epicanthal areas and the left cheek of 10 subjects for 4 weeks twice per day. Wrinkles, skin elasticity, dermal density, and skin tightening were evaluated at baseline and 2 and 4 weeks. A patient survey was conducted at 4 weeks. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between baseline and 4 weeks after applying the cream in terms of wrinkles, skin elasticity, dermal density, and skin tightening (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Use of cream containing mucus secreted by snails seems to be effective for anti-aging of the skin. Long term follow up studies, such as 3 or 6 months, to confirm the efficacy of the cream should be conducted involving a larger number of patients.
